About - Partners
The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) is the steward of Ontario’s provincial parks, forests, fisheries, wildlife, mineral aggregates, and the Crown lands and waters that make up 87 per cent of the province. This is a major responsibility that MNR manages through a diverse legislative mandate and an array of programs and partnerships aimed at meeting the needs of a broad client base. The ministry is committed to the conservation of biodiversity and to managing Ontario’s natural resources in an ecologically sustainable way to ensure they are available for the enjoyment and use of future generations. MNR provides funds and support which enables the stewardship work carried out under the Landbird Habitat Program.
The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is a national non-profit conservation organization that works with landowners to protect Canada’s natural habitats. Its plan of action is to build partnerships and develop creative conservation solutions with individuals, corporations, community groups, conservation groups and government bodies. Since 1962, NCC and its supporters have helped to protect more than 1.9 million acres (765,000 hectares) of ecologically significant land nationwide and over 118,000 acres in Ontario alone. Under the Landbird Habitat Program NCC’s Ontario Region carries out habitat enhancement and restoration to benefit landbirds. This work is supported by funding from MNR which NCC matches 3:1.
Environment Canada (EC) manages wildlife matters that are the responsibility of the federal government. These include protection and management of migratory birds, nationally significant habitat and species at risk, as well as work on other wildlife issues of national and international importance. In addition, the department does research in many fields of wildlife biology and provides incentive programs for wildlife and habitat stewardship. Through the Canadian Wildlife Service, EC provides input on strategic guidance, program development and critical science for this initiative and assists with coordination and funding for the Landowner Program.
Wildlife Habitat Canada (WHC), a founding but not current partner in the Landbird Habitat Program, is a national non-profit conservation organization established to conserve, restore and enhance wildlife habitat in Canada. WHC works through partnerships with communities, landowners, governments, non-government organizations, and industry to find effective solutions to complex environmental problems facing wildlife habitat. Wildlife Habitat Canada is committed to promoting and funding wildlife habitat conservation, restoration and enhancement. WHC successfully implemented the Landowner Program through the Ontario Wetland Habitat fund for the first two years of the Landbird Habitat Program.
Additional partners, including Bird Studies Canada have worked with the founding organizations to help implement the stewardship programs
